About Dog Language

We help dog owners understand what their dogs are saying - so fewer dogs are misunderstood, punished for communicating, or given up.

Why this site exists

Most bites, most “sudden” aggression and many behavior problems start with signals nobody noticed: a lip lick, a freeze, a turned head, a growl that was punished instead of heard. Dogs communicate clearly - we just were never taught their language. Dog Language exists to teach it, in plain English, grounded in research.

Our guides are organised into five connected hubs: dog body language, dog behavior, behavior problems, socialization and dog parks. Each hub links to detailed guides, so you can go from a quick answer to a deep understanding.

Meet Diana

Diana, Founder & Lead Writer. Diana founded Dog Language to make the science of canine communication practical for everyday owners. Every guide is researched against peer-reviewed studies and position statements from veterinary behavior organisations, and updated as the evidence evolves.

What we believe

  • Context over single signals. A wag is not a smile and a yawn is not always tiredness. We teach reading the whole dog.
  • Humane methods only. We follow the least-intrusive, minimally-aversive (LIMA) approach and the position statements of veterinary behavior organisations. We never recommend punishment, “alpha” techniques or aversive tools.
  • Health first. Many behavior changes have a medical cause. We always flag when to see a vet.
  • Know when to get help. For aggression or serious anxiety, we point you to qualified professionals - see trainer vs behaviorist.

How we work

Every guide is researched against peer-reviewed studies, recognised textbooks and professional position statements, then reviewed and updated regularly. Read our full editorial policy, or get in touch if you spot something we should improve.
